Namco: Free2Play is a threat to Triple A

Posted on Thursday, 19 January 2012 by Speed, source: IndustryGamers
At Cloud Gaming Europe, Namco-Bandai senior VP for Europe, Olivier Comte, said that free2play games can never be of high quality. Not Triple A quality at least.
"Free-to-play games can't be high quality,"

"We need to put certain value on certain work. When you're a big company… you can't take risks too quickly, you can't make a change just because there's a fashion for a couple of years; you want to be there in 20 or 30 years."
Comte also believes that the current trend for free2play games is actually a threat for Triple A development as it makes people get accustomed to cheap games, something that is not possible for games that need a huge budget to be made.

Meanwhile, companies like Wargaming.net and Sony Online Entertainment are becoming more and more popular with free2play games. And you can hardly say that f.i. World of Tanks is low quality.

SOE games aren't really free to play, you have to spend money on them if you want to play them. EQ2 which went free to play, if you want to play that properly, you still have to take out a subscription. So really free to play is just one big free trial with some heavy restrictions attached on a lot of these new AAA free to play games.
