Necromancer not in Diablo III, maybe in addon
The MTV Multiplayer blog has a definitive statement from Diablo III's lead designer Jay Wilson who says that the Necromancer class (Diablo II) won't be making a return to the third game in the hack 'n slash series. Although he won't rule out that the skeleton-summoning-bonespearing chap might be present in an eventual addon.
At the WWI reveal the developers already didn't rule out that the Necro could still make a comeback but as they showed off the Witch Doctor (another cursing/summoning class) fans got the hint the Necromancer wouldn't be one of the other three, yet-to-be-revealed classes (Barbarian is also known already) in DIII.
The development team thought they could expand the Barbarian class from DII a lot more in DIII than they would be able to with the Necro.
If you still can't get enough of Diablo III then be sure to read this recent UGO interview with the same Jay Wilson as well.

When the team was choosing which classes to include in the long-awaited sequel for Blizzard’s best-selling action-RPG series, they decided to create a brand-new one — the Witch Doctor. And with only five classes in the game, “Diablo III” just didn’t have room for two curse-dealing, pet-wielding classes.
“Our approach for classes in ‘Diablo III’ is that we don’t have a strong desire to bring back classes from the previous game,” Wilson told me. “The goal is to try and give people new gameplay and not just re-hash old gameplay. We’re not just making a ‘Diablo II’ with updated 3D graphics.”
The Barbarian, the only other class announced at this time, will return to “Diablo III,” because the team thought they could add new elements to it. As for the Necromancer, Wilson said that he was “a victim of his own success.”
“The problem was, we looked at the class and didn’t think that we could really make him a lot better,” he explained. “We could add some new stuff to him but for the most part — curses, corpse explosion, skeleton pets — done. That’s the class. We wanted to create new gameplay, so we chose to do the Witch Doctor as a different kind of class.”
He goes on with saying that the Witch Doctor will be different though so there will be room for an eventual return of the guy with that cool boney armour and those glowing hands. “Our approach for classes in ‘Diablo III’ is that we don’t have a strong desire to bring back classes from the previous game,” Wilson told me. “The goal is to try and give people new gameplay and not just re-hash old gameplay. charging at you.... and just when think all is lost you raise a dozen skeletons and watch the skeletons and the goblins try to rip each others throats out with blood and guts flying all over the place with each skeleton painted red with war, wile you stand in the back trying to avoid the flying guts. i still think diablo III Must have the necromancer. with what other class can you just run round and sit back and watch your 'man like' minions tare your enemy apart and just when you thought this can't get better you summon a 30 foot titan to literally tare your enemy limb from limb and crush the skulls of those pesky goblins, thats why i say, and i can't stress this enough you MUST have a necromancer, besides he looks awesome with bone plate armor and possibly a man's skull for a helmet and that you can not replace with a witch doctor that resembles a Zulu
warrior. since this is a slash 'n' hack game the necromancer let's he's minions to do the slashing 'n' hacking :) and if you still won't make him in the main 5 i have a grand idea to sort that problem with profit in the process to find out more, You can contact me on (necrodude@hotmail.co.uk)
