Neverwinter delayed, goes F2P

Posted on Thursday, 6 October 2011 by Speed, source: IGN
A new preview on Cryptic Studios' Neverwinter over at IGN has word that the game has been delayed and will be turned into a Free 2 Play MMOG.

The game was originally conceived as a co-op Dungeons&Dragons RPG when initially announced last year, but after the acquisition of the developer by Perfect World it seems focus is now completely on getting it into Cryptic's preferred business model.
In fact, it's shifting towards the action end of the MMO spectrum. Transferring a Dungeons & Dragons universe into an action setting might sound strange to D&D veterans, but it's been done before with some of the Baldur's Gate games. The 4th Edition of D&D also has some new rules that lend itself well to action games, which is exactly why Neverwinter is using 4th Edition as its ruleset
Originally scheduled for release this year, the game is now planned to go live in 2012.

NWN is the one IP that Atari should never have gave up, especially to a company like perfect world, who are more known for pay to win games than free to play games. Me being a big fan of the NWN series, I can see perfect world just ruining the whole genre.
