New Act of War patch released

And here's another strategy game. Act of War: Direct Action featured present day RTS combat which we hadn't seen since the good old C&C: Generals. Unfortunately AoW won't go down in history as the classic Generals was. The game was very buggy (an Atari tradition it seems), but this v1.06 patch should solve all leftover glitches.

I gotta disagree with that. Ever since the initial release, AoW was great and had only minor gameplay bugs. There was no critical or huge bugs which would disrupt your fun in single- or multiplayer and isn't today either. The patches has mostly been bringing goodies out to the fans, like maps and the editor.

Take a look at the patch history of AoW versus the patch history of C&C Generals and you will know what I mean.

The game was pretty good, but buggy indeed.

Generals didn't really have a large patch history since EA's support was mediocre at best.

But concerning AoW, the game WAS buggy.

-turning on anti-aliasing on my X850XT or R9500Pro resulted in flickering images (was mentioned in the notes though)
-it crashed several times without a reason
-i had a corrupted savefile (how on earth is that actually possible?) which caused me to start all over again

Generals does have a large patch history, all the way up to 1.07 with many bug fixes in each revision.

I never had corrupted savefiles, and have never heard of this problem until you mentioned it (I read the AoW forums frequently).

ATI drivers are known to have crash to desktop problems with several games and also problems to render shadows and other render-related problems because of their buggy drivers. Try other Catalyst versions for a possible fix.

I myself use nVIDIA and never had any CTDs or any aliasing bugs or otherwise (I'm a former user of ATI).

Act of War is the only game I have had problems with. And believe me, I play A LOT of PC games. As long as you turn off VPU Recover, you're ok.

Although I must admit nVidia's drivers are far more advanced and just "feel" more solid than ATI's. I'm a former nVidia user.

Just throwing in this new opinion: Generals and AoW both suck and have no reason to be mentioned amongst real classics like TA and StarCraft. ;)

Red Alert I is the best (imo even best game ever), without a doubt. Last year I played it again and it still has that incredible charm.

Total Annihilation is one of the best, no arguments here. But... StarCraft is a bit overrated, I thought WarCraft II was better.

Starcraft was genius, as was Dark Reign, a great game that was overshadowed by Starcraft. If you want to play an absolute classic RTS with absolute great AI and brilliant races, you must try a huge hit U.S. game that didn't get much of a look at in the rest of the world, I would heartily recommend 'War Wind' and it's follow-up 'Human Onslaught'. They came out in the mid 90's but totally rock and I play them still! TA was also great, but I know have Supreme Commander, which blows it, and all other current RTS's out of the water! With Dawn of War (& expansions) and Company of Heroes also coming out recently, we have been well served by excellent RTS's.

It is fari to say though, that Act of War had some true innovations and an excellent engine. It was the first to put soldiers in buildings (copies by CoH) and is more believable as a story and with regards it's units than even C & C 3 has with it's recent release. It's movie footage was more believable, better acted and surprisingly effective

So I put Act of War up there with the classic RTS's. It took huge gambles, and overall, they paid off. With the expansion it is even better, and I still have it on my hard drive to this day, along with the above mentioned titles. I have been playing wargames and strategy games and RTS's for over 20 years. I would put Act of War in the Top 15 strategy games of that 20 plus years. Maybe not No.1, but high enough to be very very respectable in terms of RTS/Strategy games.
