New Battlefield game for free

Posted on Tuesday, 22 January 2008 by Devilke, source: EA
EA has announced that they will release an until now unknown Battlefield game, named Battlefield Heroes, this summer. It's being developed by DICE (responsible for BF1942 and BF2) and you will be able to download it for free!

Although you will have to pay for micro transactions, the principle is that you can play the complete game for free (EA calls it "Play 4 Free") thanks to build-in advertisement. You get a downloadable client, many possibilities to build your character and a cartoon-like graphical style like in Team Fortress 2.

"There's something here for all types of players - be it our core Battlefield fans or casual gamers," said Ben Cousins, big cheese at DICE.

"With the new online model we will continually add new content to keep the game fresh and keep players engaged, while integrating player feedback in real time. As a game developer, it is such a cool new way to make games."
The game has to attract both casual gamers and veterans of the series. Thanks to the downloadable content it will be improved and renewed constantly.

One to look forward to this summer! You can look at the site here.

WTF is a micro transaction? And I like how the gameforwindows rag that covers this, has the interview of TF2 at the bottom. The animation style for both games looks exactly the same.

That's where you pay for perks in the game. Want a better gun? It costs you $5. That cool neon-green armor? $3

Micro transactions are used in most of the free MMOs and several Xbox 360 games.
