New PSN problems but fixed in the meantime

Earlier today the page where you can reset your PlayStation Network password was taken down by Sony, just like the PlayStation.com website.

The reason for this was that there was evidence that through a simple exploit of the page you can take over someone's PSN account only by having his or her e-mail address and date of birth after which the "hacker" could enter a new password himself. These data points of course were amongst the info leaked last month when PSN was taken offline.

Sony communication boss, Patrick Seybold, has admitted this on the Playstation Blog and they've fixed the problem by now. He emphasyzed that the system wasn't hacked but that it was indeed an "exploit".
We temporarily took down the PSN and Qriocity password reset page. Contrary to some reports, there was no hack involved.

In the process of resetting of passwords there was a URL exploit that we have subsequently fixed.

Consumers who haven't reset their passwords for PSN are still encouraged to do so directly on their PS3. Otherwise, they can continue to do so via the website as soon as we bring that site back up.
We for sure believe this, but you can't really say this enhances confidence in Sony's security capabilities. Luckily the issue was quickly solved and you can now reset your password and game online again.
