New details on Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars for PC was one of the highlights at E3 this year. Whether it was because of the enormous screen or just because it looked cooler than liquid oxygen I'll leave up to you to decide.
In stead of the first ET which was based on Return to Castle Wolfenstein (and completely free), Quake 4 is taken as basis for the new game.
The Doom 3 engine will be used but this doesn't mean we'll only get creepy indoor scenes. There's a huge variation on playing fields foreseen, a lot of them outdoors.
Interesting is the use of the new 'Megatexture'-technology of John Carmack which allows to portray the viewing point up to the horizon. No longer is mist or a well-place hill necessary to limit the viewing. This also has a cool effect on the gameplay:
The happenings in the game will proceed on Earth, right before what we got to play in Quake 2 from 1997. Most probably we won't only be playing in the desert levels as shown at E3 but also in a jungle and other areas.
A release date hasn't been set yet.

Enemy Territory: Quake Wars will take place during the conflict between the human soldiers of Earth (known as the Earth Defense Force, or the EDF) and the evil Strogg alien invaders.

According to Wedgwood, the new technology will also let the development team assign different physical properties to different parts of the level, such as making certain surfaces made of asphalt (which will be noisier to walk upon but offer better traction for land vehicles) and others made of sand (which will be quieter to walk upon but will bog down those military jeeps).
