Next-gen CryEngine tech demo and interview

A tech demo of the CryEngine 2 has surfaced on the net. You can download the small file right here from our servers. It's shaky cam footage but quite pretty nonetheless. For those who want to see paradise again, see it!

Of course, there are some questions to be answered about this second incarnation of the CryEngine (which was first utilised in Far Cry). Communitysite CryMod gathered a lot of info by translating an interesting hardware interview from Gamestar.de. There, Cevat Yerli of Crytek discusses the porting of the engine to next-gen consoles Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 (once again no word about the Revolution). CryEngine 2 is rumoured to run only on DirectX 10 and thus it wouldn't be ready/useable until Windows Vista is around.

/GameStar/dev: So where's the technical journey leading?

Cevat Yerli: In general it's leading to multi-threading, so multi-core and multi-cpu, a streaming architecture, cross platform, and for each pixel there will be at least one shader.

/GameStar/dev: ... the graphics interfaces are requiring an extra effort?

Cevat Yerli: Yeah, because of OpenGL ES for the PS3 we have to recode our whole rendering. If you look at it closely, CryEngine 2 will have 2 solutions for each system in total. If a developer abstracts that, the technology is optimized very specifically. Otherwise you cannot utilize the whole power. Alternatively you can abstract it in a way that it is not running on all system, then the strongest platform is losing out the most ...

To sum it up; they got a lot more work now they have to prepare this engine for next-gen consoles too. It's a pity that everyone has to jump on the console wagon too, one can wonder what they could have done with that time if they were concentrating on PC only.

Not really much changes in the graphical engine, but I'm looking forward to it, because Far Cry was great.
