Nintendo 3DS price plummets

Posted on Thursday, 28 July 2011 by Speed, source: Fragland
Nintendo today announced the price for their latest handheld, the Nintendo 3DS, will get a serious drop worldwide.

As of August 12th more than a third of the price will be taken off, even though the company didn't want to commit to an exact price point yet for all regions:
I can confirm that Nintendo of Europe will be reducing the European trade price of Nintendo 3DS to retailers by around a third from August 12 2011, as part of a global trade price reduction initiative.

The ultimate price to consumers is, of course, determined by retailers, however we look forward to consumers benefiting from much lower retail prices very soon.

To give you an idea: in the US the price will drop from 249 dollar to $169 as of August 12th, while a day earlier the Japanese will see the price of the handheld drop from 25.000 Yen to 15.000 Yen.

So in Europe we still have to wait, but it does mean the handheld will become a lot cheaper and will be closer to that of the DSi.
“We are giving shoppers every incentive to pick up a Nintendo 3DS, from an amazing new price to a rapid-fire succession of great games.”
The 3DS arrived on the market in Europe last March so the price drop isn't only huge, but also quick, especially when compared to previous hardware launches. Could it be that the competition from iPhones, smartphones and other portable hardware has become bigger than expected? Or does Nintendo just want to get as much market share as possible in a short timespan and before Sony launches their Vita?

Nintendo for sure doesn't want to leave anything to coincidence to keep consumers satisfied. Those who bought the 3D handheld already and log in to the Nintendo eShop before August 12 will get ten downloadable NES games for free as well as ten Game Boy or Game Boy Advance titles.

Nintendo Europe explains:
“The free software will then be made available at a later stage. More details on the programme will be announced on the Nintendo of Europe website shortly.”
With GBA games like Yoshi’s Island, Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgames and Mario vs. Donkey Kong there for sure will be something for everyone.

These decisions have been made after Nintendo made their Q1 results public which showed the 3DS only got sold 700.000 times in the period of March, April and June.

Also for the Wii there wasn't much good news as in the last quarter sales went down with 50% compared to the same period last year, from about 3 million to 1.5 million worldwide. Seeing as just about everyone has one already this shouldn't come as too much of a surprise. The same trend could be observed for the DS.

In total this came down to an overall revenue decrease from 189 billion yen to 94 billion for the period. With the Wii U planned for end 2012 it's clear Nintendo has to put everything they can on the 3DS if they want to increase their numbers still.

In any case: the 3DS will now certainly be worthwhile to check out, especially with the release of some strong games and the fact that it can also still plays DS games.
