Nintendo: DS piracy results in 50% decrease in sales in Europe
Oh goodie, here we go again.
Asahi.com is reporting that Nintendo is blaming DS piracy for a near 50% sales drop of DS games in Europe for the last couple of months:
First of all I would like to say this: "Up yours to all those publishers abandoning the PC supposedly due to piracy!". This again shows that piracy isn't a PC-only matter and the only reason to (almost) abandon the platform in favor for console is money-reasons.
Secondly, I would like to state that although piracy is bad, Nintendo makes the typical flaw of counting every illegal download as a "lost sale", making things look worse than they actually are. That 50% drop in sales for sure isn't purely due to piracy and I think one should rather have to look at the quality of DS games released in that period compared to before.

Nintendo Co. said magicom hardware was largely to blame for a nearly 50-percent drop in sales in Europe in recent months.
Globally, the company estimates that annual losses are in the region of trillions of yen.
In June 2009, Nintendo monitored 10 websites based overseas that allowed people to illicitly download game software, and found that software had been pirated a total 238 million times.
Multiplied by the average unit price for software, the figure translates into 1 trillion yen ($10.7 billion) in lost sales.
Apparently most pirated copies are used in Italy, Spain and France.Globally, the company estimates that annual losses are in the region of trillions of yen.
