Nintendo on a diet: behold the DS Lite
Posted on Thursday, 26 January 2006 by Speed, source: Games Industry
Rumors have been floating around for quite some time already but now it's official! Nintendo's latest handheld is getting its redesign and alongside also a new name: Nintendo DS Lite.
The DS Lite will be 133mm wide, 73,9mm high and 21,5mm fat which means that it will be 42% smaller. Probably the measures of the dual screens are kept.
With its 215 gram, it will also be 60 grams lighter than the original version.
The redesign will be in stores in Japan on March 2nd and will be on sale for 118 euro. When the new DS launches in Europe or US is still unknown.

Aside from the smaller size and weight and the redesigned shell, the DS Lite has few functionality changes, confounding earlier reports from some commentators which suggested that it would add voice communication capabilities and even IP telephony.
The main new feature is an adjustable brightness setting for the screen, similar to the one offered by Sony's PlayStation Portable, which will allow users to flick between four different levels of brightness.
