You can say what you want about the Wii, but one thing is quite sure, it has been an immensely lucrative gamble for Nintendo.

Nintendo has always been confident they would sell many millions of the console but that they would get to that magic 50 million mark quicker than the Playstation 2 was something even Nintendo's Satoru Iwata didn't dream of.

It comes really as no surprise now that his keynote speech at the GDC was one big victory lap for Nintendo where he festively announced their successes and that they are now focussing on the next milestone, 100 million consoles sold.

They have until 2012 if they want to beat the Playstation 2 again.
