No HL2 without internet

Posted on Thursday, 21 October 2004 by Speed, source: Fragland
It seems Valve Software doesn't care anymore about people who haven't got an internet connection yet as apparantly Half-Life 2 will need to be activated over the net before you can even play the single player campaign...
GenGamers spotted the following at the HL2World forums :
I've had a second source confirm from Valve that the Internet (and Steam) is needed to get the Single Player RETAIL game going. Here's the message (it's from Valve Support via the Web and so there are no email headers etc.)

Hello,
"Will it require setting up a STEAM account so that the game can be authenticated ONLINE at install time? (and then play OFFLINE)"

Exactly, this is how the game will be 'activated'.

Crackers will disable that shit in no time and release the game like any other. This will only hurt paying customers.

Could this have possibly contributed to some of the problems they were having with Vivendi?

I was never a big fan of Valve in the first place, and as time goes on, it seems like they are only getting worst. With all this nonsense Im not so sure I'm intrested in buying this game.

To pull all this stuff off and still reach monster sales, HL2 is gonna have to be VERY extraordinary. It seems to me like they're very sure of themselves, which is kind of reassuring.
