No damage models in Gran Turismo 5

Posted on Monday, 2 July 2007 by Rian, source: Car and Driver magaz
Kazunori Yamauchi, father and mentor of the Gran Turismo series has given some details in an interview about the fifth game which is still in production. The game was originally planned for a release in early 2008, but Yamauchi-san said it will probably be available sometime later that year.

On top of that, he announced that GT5 will not contain damage models, but it is possible that they'll be added afterwards with an update. The models itself should be quite detailed: it now takes about 180 days for one man to create a car from scratch.

No big deal with car damagel, the game is eye candy anyway. But damn, 180days for one car !? seems quite slow, but i guess thats because they make it super detailed. :)

They said one man, but do you really think they only have ONE man doing those cars. Probably lot more than that.

Ok let's say that 150 of the 180 days were working days. 8 hours per day. So you are telling me that it takes 1200 man hours to design a single car? Whoever buys that load of crap is pretty stupid. Either they have really badly skilled designers, or they're outright lying. Likelihood is the second.

Why they must be lieing :) Derf said so, all the while giving serious and well thought through arguments and well thought through answers to potential counter-arguments in advance already.

Seriously though, you're going to have to give arguments when saying they're lieing :)

Just seems like the random kind of statistical data you would want to give to the press. Doesn't change anything does it? End product will be the same, and wether or not they do work 180 days on it, the cars' detail is what matters, not the ammount of time spent on it. Sure, eye for detail is nice, and it's a nice illustration if true, but it still doesn't change anything.

I think it's a lie because economically speaking, spending 1200 man hours per car is a hell of a lot of money. Let's assume these guys get paid 15-20 euros per hour. So each car for that game will cost the company about 20,000 euros. That's an insane expense, considering how many cars there are and the amount of other costs involved in making a game. Unless they employ slave designers in basements who are all 12, I don't see that happening. I mean, it's not exactly going to be a ground breaking game for them to invest that much money.

unless the care is made of millions of vertices ,I imagine the guy making these cars spends most of his hours with his feet up pondering about how much he is being paid to do fuck all.

Maybe they include getting license, getting the car itself and testing car on track, rework data from track, taking photos, paintjob with highQ textures, record sound. Maybe 180days is what it takes for the most unique car to get done. :P

But yeah, sound a bit too much.

kinda sad that it won't include damage models, almost every game has it and they don't :)

I dont reckon GT5 will be anything more than GT4 with better graphics anyway, same old tracks, no damage, no cockpit view i bet, sure it will look pretty but the Gran Turismo games are getting rather stale and i think they need some seriously new things added to bring it back up to date.

I dont want to see a single old track in the game, all new game should bring all new tracks but i'll doubt that will happen, can only wish though, Forza 2 suffered the same thing, nice looking game but its essentialy Forza 1.5.

Added damage with an update would be impossible, think of the work needed to be done to incorporate damage, all that extra car modeling to show the damage and they would have to add new physics for the handling of a damaged car, they going to give us that in an update.......dont think so.

Sucks that they don't have damage... damage is what makes car games fun.. who wants to drive around in circles all day... even with eye candy graphics, it gets boring..
