OPM journalist chooses X360 for now

Posted on Sunday, 13 August 2006 by Devilke, source: Digg
OPM (Official Playstation Magazine) journalist Dana Jongewaards told in her blog that she isn't planning on buying a PS3 yet. However, she will get herself a Xbox360:

$600 might be worth it if there were several huge titles on the near horizon that were PS3-exclusive. But for the first year at least, there are very few big titles that are PS3 exclusive. GTA4 and Assassins will be available for the 360 at the same time. And most of the big guns--FFXIII, MGS4--won't be hitting for quite some time after the launch...

So ultimately, I can't justify it. $600 is a lot of money, especially when I can get what--for me at least--will be a very similar experience for $400. I would like to own a PS3, and I hope that the price drops soon so I can consider it. But until then, this Official PlayStation Magazine editor will have to join the dark side.

She thinks the price of 600 dollars is only justified if there are real top games available and those, think of FFXIII and MGS4, are still far away. Other games like Assassin's Creed and GTA4 will also be available on the Xbox360, while paying less for the hardware.

Looks like HD-DVD will cost $200, but at least it will have 1080p support according to GameSpot.

At least now I think all the price-whiners in the world should shut up. If you have a descent job you can easily afford a PS3 anyway. It is not like with PCs where you have to upgrade it every other year.

Btw, why does not the Edit-function for posts work all the time? Nothing happens when I click it, tested it in both Opera and IE.

good thing xbox 360 HD-DVD is optional, I prefer a game machine, not a movie player.
And I hear Blue-ray has a whopping 24 titles out there to choose from when the PS3 launches. Whoopdee freakin doo.

Oh and what confirmed launch titles are must have from PS3? seems like the heavy hitters won't be out til late next year.

anyway........no need to get a PS3 at launch. unless you wanna watch "Catwoman" on Blue-Ray LOL!!!!

I think you are just making up reasons as you go to bash Sony/PS3 now

Not really. Actually, I don't plan on buying X360 nor PS3 at this moment so I guess that would make me even more objective than anyone else as I don't have a "history" that favours either brand.

Anonymous above Speed: I am not going to bother responding to that jibberish.

Speed, I think if you look at your history, you will see a lot of PS3 bashing and almost no Xbox360 news at all :P

Parallax: When X360 got released we posted plenty of X360 news. The only difference is that more recently (last 6 months) both Microsoft and Sony have been doing a fantastic job at stabbing at each other and who are we not to post that?

And, honestly, Sony has been doing a terrific job at giving themselves an extremely arrogant image. You may not agree with that (opinions are free as always) but I'm not alone in that perception. If you check out 90% of all multiplatform sites, you'll see a similar impression.

I/We've been stating quotes and facts that have been outed by people from several companies. I don't see that as bashing. They do it to themselves.

As to my personal opinion: I think of a console as a gaming platform that may bring some additional features in the living room. I don't think of a console as a Media Center that replaces everything.

If you want a quality HD-DVD or BluRay player, you'll buy a standalone player and NOT a PS3 or X360. Just look at the quality of the PS2 and Xbox dvd players, they were no match to decent standalone players.

And to go back on topic with the whole BluRay/HD-DVD battle:
Sony and Philips have a fantastic history of failed formats: Video2000, Betamax, CD-i, UMD, MiniDisc, ... Every time they try to push a new format onto consumers and they're doing it again with BluRay.

I agree with most of what you said, Speed, but not completely with the last statement.
- Betamax is still used today: most tv-crews on location record on it.
- Minidisk is still the preferred format for recording live music gigs straight from the PA board
- BluRay is not doomed: look at what the PS2 did for DVD...

- AlterEgo, too lazy to log in! :)

AlterEgo: I'm talking about consumers, not industry formats. And you have to admit that as a consumer format, both Minidisc and Betamax have failed.

I also didn't state that BluRay was doomed, just noted that in my opinion the market isn't looking for a replacement for DVD's just yet and that Sony/Philips are again trying to push a new format (BluRay) on consumers.
