Over half of all Conan servers to be shut down

The MMO market is more competitive than ever. Tabula Rasa is as good as disappeared, Hellgate is no more and also Age of Conan hasn't succeeded to convince players after its rock-solid start.

Funcom has announced they'll drop their serverpark for the game from 49 to only 18. That means only 3 servers left for the US, not something you could call a sign of a "WoW-beater".

In Europe 12 will remain but that's also due to the fact that we tend to speak quite a lot of different languages.

With servers in every regional sub-set reduced to the bare minimum of one of each type, the merge list is the clearest indication yet from Funcom of the extent to which Age of Conan's player-base has dwindled since launch.

However, the mergers will certainly provide a better experience for remaining players, with busier and more dynamic surroundings, more combat and healthier economies on the remaining realms.
The decision should bring a more fun and intense experience which can only be described of positive for the remaining gamers and the game itself. The makers will also keep working on the first expansion and will soon be taking on the high-level content.

There's still some hope left!

And yet EVE On-line is still trucking along doing just fine. Perhaps developers should stop trying to topple World of Warcraft and just make something unique that stands on its own. There are gamers out there that WoW doesn't appeal to...

The era of WoW clones is pretty much over. In fact there never was a successful WoW clone. If an MMO wants to be successful they need to find a niche and make a solid game.

"Make it fun."
The rule that should be #1 for all developers. If it's fun, people will stay.

Exactly. Cloning a clone is a road to distaster.
