PC preview: Myst V: End of Ages

Posted on Friday, 22 April 2005 by Speed, source: Fragland
Doccie went to London to attend Ubisoft's pre-E3 conference and he came back with a shitload of information. Unfortunately, most of it is under NDA so up until May 18th we won't be able to bring you anything... EXCEPT our preview of Myst V: End of Ages, the last game in the series.

"As I said, the game is real-time which means that the pre-rendered backgrounds have been replaced with an equally goodlooking 3D environment." This is wrong, in another interview, Rand Miller says that Myst 5 will have a bit better looking graphics than what you saw in the intial Myst game, which does not even come close to the quality in Riven, Exile, and certainly not Myst 4.

(read the interview here: www.gamesplanet.be/index.php?main=gp_article&info=gp_article&articleId=427&chk=5So507f20g)

I am a hardcore fan of the Myst-series. That's why I've always enjoyed pre-rendered backgrounds with insanely details and real actors. To me, RealMyst and Uru: Beyond Ages sucked beyond everything because they used 3D graphics. It is like defying what the very essence of Myst is built upon.

I think that ending the Myst-series with 3D-graphics is like moving away from the series. A big disappointment for me.

Anyway, just my opinion as a hardcore fan of the series.

What is wrong about Doccie's sentence, he only forgot to mention that it's better than the original Myst graphics.

Btw, pre-rendered visuals remain too static. And if you see what recent engines can do then the detail comes very close imo. The Myst V screenshots at least don't look that bad or less atmospheric than previous titles.

If you have played Myst4, you know that pre-rendered visuals are no longer "static". Real-time graphics are still light years away from the quality you see in pre-rendered graphics. To your statement I just gotta say: get new eyes.

Well, play some Doom³ perhaps for a change, alright? Pre-rendered not static? I didn't know you could manipulate every thing in pre-rendered scenes, let alone walk where you want to. 'not being static' in my definition doesn't only rely to some repetitive animations in the scenery. Excuse me for seeing the slide-show way of moving around as antique, lad. Stick to your taste if you want but I think that the adventure-genre deserves a little bit more 'progress' than that.
