PC to become future of console platforms?

Posted on Thursday, 11 December 2008 by Speed, source: Gamepolitics
PC Gaming Alliance president Randy Stude sees the future bright for PC's as a gaming platform and he even believes that our beloved computers could eventually become the hardware platform for console gaming in the future:

RS: The guts of every console should tell you that the capability is there for the PC to act as the central point for all the consoles. If you bought a PC and as part of that equation you said, Okay, when you’re on the phone with Dell, “Hey, Dell, on this PC, this new notebook I’m buying, can you make sure it has the PlayStation 4 option built into it?”

Well, why not? Why shouldn’t that be the case? [Sony is] certainly not making any money on the hardware. I mean, can’t they create a stable enough environment to specify that if Dell’s going to sell that notebook and say that it’s PlayStation 4 [compatible] that it must have certain ingredients and it must meet certain criteria? Absolutely they could that. Are they going to do it? I don’t know. I predict that they will. I predict that all of the console makers over time will recognize that it’s too expensive to develop the proprietary solution and recognize the value of collapsing back on the PC as a ubiquitous platform.
It would certainly be an interesting evolution but I don't see the PC being the center of the living room and that's where Sony wants to be.

More and more people are not using their tv these day. Newspapers and mag are going bankuprt. Runescape is now more popular than hollywood stars or sports. More and morepeople are online so I don't see a future for consoles. The ps3 is a marketing failure for sony. Micro osft has lost alot of money over consoles. The only company doing well is nintendo. Nintendo has kick their hardcore players to the side.

You're thinking about PS3 as a standalone product. Don't forget Sony has a bigger strategy that includes TV's, surround systems, Blu-ray and so on. Sony wants to be the "heart" of the digital living room and the Playstation is just one of the devices that's used to get there

That will never happen

even if we consider the costy upgrade to Windows XP for proper DX10 and now the immediate release of Windows 7 and who on earth knows what else in a few months after, we have a HUGE gamer turn of right there

Personally i never want to hear about PC gaming ever again, my 360 is fine, gets almost all PC games i need, and runs them perfectly fine without a single problem or second of my life lost

The only way for PC to really sttact gamers is to have a transparent mode, that is press a different than the "on" button, insert the game DVD and play, no options, menus, searching for pathces and version etc

Until then PC is only dying more and more, in fact i hate PC gaming so much that i would love to see it die altogether, i want to play games not loose half my life trying to play them and upgrading to play them

i agree, PC is just too much of an hassle to get going. I mean I'm a crazy C&C fan, and I even play that on my 360 now. PC's are for kids who have no money, who pirate games, and spend 90% of their time getting the games to run smoothly. We 20+ guys have things to do!! Insert and PLAY!!!

As a hardcore gamer I find that PC's offer the best online competition and games, not to mention support and updates. Consoles you have to pay to play online, most games are unsupported and gameplay is inherently dumbed down due to those clumsy controllers.

The truth of the matter is, consoles are becoming more and more like PC's. You have internet browsing, mouse & keyboard support etc..

FACT: A good gaming PC cost 3-4 times as much as a console. From the presentation of your argument and the lack of any thought put into your comment, its safe to assume you are actually 15 years old, and your mom bought you an x360 last christmas because your too broke to buy your own PC.

I'm not one to bash console gaming, I have enjoyed it in the past and the present. But to even suggest that PC gaming is dieing or that someone playing a game on a PC is too complicated is just absurd. My 7 year old cousin can turn on a computer and install a game all by himself, if its too complicated for you then I have a feeling that even reading my response may be too complicated.

You say PC gaming is complicated? What about when your xbox fails for the 3rd time. Too bad you couldn't fix it yourself, nope you have to send it to microsoft to fix it and send it back. With a PC, if you have a problem, you google it and apply the solution. Its really that simple.

Until then PC is only dying more and more, in fact i hate PC gaming so much that i would love to see it die altogether, i want to play games not loose half my life trying to play them and upgrading to play them

And this clown? Your argument doesn't even merit a response.
