PS3 doesn't have enough RAM for cross-game chat

Posted on Saturday, 20 August 2011 by Speed, source: Eurogamer
"It just does everything" but not cross-game chat apparently.

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has clarified why cross-game chat is currently not available on the PS3, and never will be. Apparently the console doesn't have enough built-in RAM memory and games use all of it up, not giving any of it free for other apps while playing:
"Once a game gets RAM we never give it back," he said. "It's not possible to retrofit something like that after the fact."

"The game has to use its own memory to do [in-game voice chat]. There's always voice chat in the game. But it's a part of a game feature. It's not a part of an OS feature. That's the reason in terms of the ability to have voice chat across different games."
For reference: the PS3 has 256MB system RAM and 256MB video RAM. In comparison, Sony's upcoming Playstation Vita will have 512MB system RAM and 128MB video RAM. Yoshida stated that therefore the Vita would be more capable for cross-game chat than the PS3.
