PS3 sales getting weaker and weaker

Posted on Thursday, 22 March 2007 by Speed, source: TheStreet
TheStreet has analyzed the sales figures of Sony's PS3 console to find that they're going downhill

In the U.S., February's sales numbers issued last week by NPD Group underlined how weak a position Sony is in now. Nintendo's Wii sales dipped from 426,000 in January to 335,000 in February, while Sony's PS3 sales slumped from 244,000 in January to 127,000 in February.

The $600 price tag of the fully equipped PS3 is weighing heavily on Sony as U.S. consumers show some signs of spending caution. The size of PS3's slump relative to the Wii's decline is revealing, especially because the Wii had no particularly interesting new games debuting in February.

While the US figures aren't anything to be happy about (for Sony that is), Japan is doing even worse:

The March 5-11 week in Japan seems to imply that the February/March hit games did not give Sony's consoles a sustained lift. Just two to three weeks after major game launches, sales of both PS3 and PSP are dropping off more steeply than expected.

So Sony, when's the price drop coming?

Not being able to keep a conversation productive is what makes one an ignorant fool regardless of what is your economic status or ethnic background. There are many ways to "kick butt" without being negative. Learn everything that there is to know in the English language: expand your vocabulary, improve sentence infrastructure, and you will be successful at whatever you're trying to convey.

Make it difficult to contradict your argument by keeping personal opinions out and providing the reader with hard facts.

So if PS3 sales are so bad, how come it has been in the number 1 spot (excluding it's controller) on Amazon UK? (www.amazon.co.uk/gp/bestsellers/videogames/ref=sv_vg_h__3/026-0162943-6696402) Here is a concept that seems to elude a lot of folks, the PS3 is the first console in a long time that the press was saying was going to have an abundance of consoles. In fact there were over double the PS3's in Europe for its launch than both the Xbox 360 and Wii had for their launches COMBINED. Word for over a month was you could get one WITH OUT having to be their in the first 15 minute. So tell me why would some one stay up to midnight on a work day and potentially have to deal with a huge crowd when you could simply walk in after work the next day at a reasonable hour and get one just as easily? Apparently several stores reported that if things kept up they were going to be sold out by Monday. So if that is the case that means the launch night might not have been successful, but the following days may have been. According to VG Reports over half a million units were sold in the first day ( probably derived from the reported record breaking preorder sales that were also talked about). Honestly I look forward to seeing the actual numbers come the end of the month instead of listening to all this negative hype.

It's sort of a given that a new system should be selling well when it's initially launched.

But the logic itself is flawed. If people can't even get a Wii online, then why would they be ordering it when they can find it more quickly in the streets since they have no clue as to when it'll be available online? If the 360 is more available on the street and you don't have to pay for shipping, then why would you order it online?

What also doesn't matter is how well the system sold within the first week. The question is whether or not those same sales can be sustained for a longer period of time. The PS3 sold out in a matter of seconds in the US and Japan; weeks later, sales for the system are far below its competitors even with an abundant amount of consoles on the racks.

In contrast, the Wii's been consistently sold out. It's the middle of March, and people are STILL having great difficulty tracking the system down in America. In Japan, I imagine it being a similar situation seeing the fluctuation of sales per week.

It should also be a wonder WHERE those extra shipments came from in the first place. How did Sony effectively "create" extra systems in a few months when there appeared to be a shortage in both America and Japan? The reality? I have a feeling that the poorer sales in those regions openned up extra units to be able to be sold in Europe.

Funny, its not even in the top 3 anymore. That #1 spot lasted a whole weekend huh? What I find interesting is that the DS lite and 2 of its games are in the top 10 even after all this time.

The reality is that the next gen wars have only now finally begun in earnest with Europe finally getting the PS3. My own view is that the gaming world is expanding far enough inoto the mainstream that there will be room for all 3 consoles, although if that means i require to read ever more posts from whining microsoft sookers then I'm not looking forward to it.

It strikes me if the views of commentators on sites like this reflected the way society acts at all then Sony would have sold about 8 consoles in total.

The reality for most UK resisdents is that the press and the non-gaming public think of a console and they think of Playstation. That isn;t going to change. My local gamestores have now devoted significant sections of their shop to the PS3, on the basis they at least have some stock to sell, unlike the wii....

If the PS3 wasnt launch a year and a half LATE in the UK they certainly wouldnt have set any sales records. The ONLY reason they set these records is because they bought themselves 5 months by screwing Europe. AGAIN. Screwed on price, screwed on release, screwed on PS2 backwards compatibility, this time SCREW YOU SONY!.

Wii-60 for me.

I read yesterday that Ubisoft is not going to consider releasing games for the PS3 until 2008 in hopes unit sales will increase of the console.

wow.

If Microsoft buys Take Two (Grand Theft Auto) the title would become exclusive. Nail in the coffin for Sony.

I agree, Screw you SONY!

fuck this headline alalalalalaaaa i dont wanna hear it!!!!

If sony is still selling any consoles at all then it's because of ignorant fools like you. Stop being such a fanboi and look the truth in the eye, Sony's sales are dropping because people don't want to pay up so much for a console no better and in many cases worse (less games) than the Xbox 360.

Most consumers have at least brain enough to decide what is really worth their money from more than one source. If you keep reading the bullshit that Sony feed their customers you'll become even more braindead.

Well i didnt really ask for any of ya's opinions....i know that sony is getting wack but your probably a xbox fanboy and you really shouldnt be saying anything....

P.S dude stfu man!!... if im a sony fanboy wich i am. why tha fuck those it matter to you for wat i say and have the nerves to call me a fool if your acting like one right now!

I'm an XBOX360 fanboy? I don't even own one.
