Pachter: Next-gen Wii will be current-gen

Posted on Tuesday, 14 December 2010 by Speed, source: IndustryGamers
No week passes by without Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter spilling his guts these days.

The latest (and last of this year) Q&A column with the guy talks about Nintendo and Pachter's expectations regarding the Big N's successor to the Wii. Surprise: he doesn't think too big about it (and that wasn't even supposed to be a joke about the console's size ;p).
I think that their next console will be on par technologically with the current PS3 and Xbox 360, and don't expect them to advance technology at all with their next offering. They will undoubtedly advance game play, and are likely to further innovate there, but I don't think that the classic term "generation" can be applied to that, if there aren't more pixels and a faster frame rate offered up. Because I don't know what they are going to do, this answer can never be right, so I'll just wait to see it published repeatedly to demonstrate what an idiot I am.
He continues, saying that he's been wrong about Nintendo's next moves the last couple of years, eventhough he still believes his suggestions were what Nintendo should have done:
Once I saw Kinect, I was more certain than before that Nintendo NEEDED to move before the others took too much market share, but as the year wore on, it became clear that they weren't going to do anything in 2009. My view a year ago was that only fools would allow their competitors to steal their market share, and a year ago, I most certainly did not think of Nintendo management as foolish. Hence, I assumed that they would see the imminent threats from Kinect and Move (announced at GDC 2010), and would rush a Wii HD to market by year-end 2010. Again, I was wrong.

The point of this long diatribe is that Nintendo now finds itself in a position of having to play catch up.
Well, we tend to agree with him on this one. The Wii is completely outdated in hardware specs, and for motion control people now have options. However, he feels that Nintendo is now in a position they can't advance technologically beyond the PS3 or X360 because otherwise studios and publishers would have to invest too much in order to port their games to Nintendo's next console:
I don't see the third party publishers embracing the Wii 2 unless the technology is similar to the 360 or PS3, making ports inexpensive. Therefore, I can only conclude that the Wii 2 will not be "next" generation, and that Nintendo will have a lot of catching up to do.
To be honest: if the Wii2 would be similar in power as the PS3 or X360, then why would anyone want to buy it? To play four year old PS3/X360 games and Mario in HD? Isn't it a bit too late for that?

On the other hand, Nintendo has another problem: their Wii was launched quite cheap and focused on pure innovative gameplay. If they are unable to innovate again with the Wii 2, they'll have a hard time convincing people to upgrade unless they really make it a lot more powerful than the competition. Of course, that's my opinion... but if Pachter's allowed to have one, so am I! ;)
