Pachter: consoles more powerful than PC

Posted on Tuesday, 23 March 2010 by Speed, source: GameTrailers
Just when he started to gain our respect back, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter does it again. Lose it I mean.

In the latest issue of Pach-Attack, the guy stated that he believes consoles are more powerful than PCs and that that's the reason why PC gaming is declining (not counting MMOs).
"It's becoming a declining industry because you can get a near PC experience on a console."

"The PS3 is a pretty powerful box, and it is probably more powerful than 90 per cent of PC's out there. The 360 is probably more powerful than 85 per cent of PC's out there."
That PC gaming is declining is certainly something we won't argue (numerous reasons, customers being annoyed being one of them). Saying that consoles are more powerful than 90% of all PCs out there... that's going a bit too far for us. Unless you count in every office PC that has been bought in the last ten years or so. But that wouldn't be an honest comparison if you ask me.

A Michael Pachter, the champion of idiocy. You know, when you only track 20% of PC sales (NPD retail figures), one would certainly get a very skewed opinion of the current market. However, when you take into account the comprehensive Horizons Report, from the PCGA (PC Gaming Alliance), and realize the PC Gaming Industry _MADE_ 12.1 Billion, last year (a 3% increase from 2008), and sold more hardware (Desktops and Laptops) than all the consoles combined...well, it makes one pause and wonder...what exactly he's analyzing. Cause...it sure isn't reality.

Facts are, any PC bought within the past 3 years, would outperform the 360/PS3. Fact is, of the 5+ people, I know to have both consoles, and gaming rigs. The Gaming rig, stomps the consoles hands down in performance.

Oh to live in the fantasy world Mr Pachter exists in. Actually no, that'd suck. PC gaming is great, so is console gaming. They both have their place, and to be honest, both markets should be analyzed fairly. This just seems to be a half-arsed approach to misinforming the general public.

I don't think he deliberately tries to misinform. He's a money-dude who follows the marketing hype from major companies. And they're all about saying just how wonderful consoles are and how shitty pc gaming is these days

If you compare numbers of games which are on all 3, consoles have more players and sales. If you compare all games, including things like Facebook, Myspace, pogo, and a ton of other sites and pc minded games, couple that with hardware sales, its impossible. Consoles cant compare.

They just ignore those facts cause it takes more time to investigate than just looking at sales reports for MW2.

Blizzard may be great development studio, but they're not a "major company". It's Activision that's the "major" part in Activision-Blizzard ;)

You don't have to go that far even, just already include online sales (which aren't included in official stats which only count retail) and PC is already bigger than console. But Pachter did say from the start he doesn't include MMOS and such in his comparison.
