Parents still worried about games.

Posted on Tuesday, 4 December 2007 by Leentjes, source: bbc
Recent results of an investigation show that a lot of parents are still worried about the content of certain games that their children play.

Daddies and mommies from France, Italy an Germany said they don't want their kids to play videogames for longer than one hour a day. Approximately 50% wasn't aware assessment-systems like PEGI exist.

Consultant Margaret Robinson wasn't surprised about that.

"This is a well-known issue in the UK that while the ratings system is quite good, both parental awareness and understanding of it is quite poor.

"The industry has tried a number of initiatives and game specific retailers tend to be fairly responsible about trying to enforce these things."

About 60% of all children game alone. Complete results will be announced around March 2008.

If more parents and less lawyers worried about what was impacting their children, I believe we'd see rather rapid improvements to society as a whole.

Or the very opposite with over-parenting and loss of independance and initiative. Always two sides to the coin.

I didn't say parents should shield their children from everything in the world, just that they should genuinely care and participate in their children's lives.

I used to watch rated R movies with my Dad at age 12. He would fastforward sex scenes and such, and he'd never let me watch something rated R unless he had seen it first, but I was very "unsheltered" when it came to my parents, but they were always involved in my life and participate in many such activites with me.

Good parenting doesn't mean hiding your children from the outside world, it just means caring what they are doing.

You'll be surprised how often the two are confused.
