Peter Moore: PC business model "doesn't work"
Posted on Thursday, 30 April 2009 by Speed, source: Edge-Online
EA Sports' Peter Moore has never been shy to give a good quote but now he's going pretty far.
In an interview he said that for EA Sports shipping a PC game on a physical disc is no longer a workable business model:
Indeed, let the buyer burn his digital copy on an empty disc he bought as well. This way the publisher can collect the same amount of money, increase profit and if a consumer wants a disc, he can buy that separately!
I'm truly starting to hate this type of "business people" who would almost dare to ask you money for playing a demo if they could get away with it. And why would this "new" business model only apply to PC Games? It's not like consoles aren't online these days. In fact, with Xbox LIVE and PSN they're the ones leading the market in this area!
One word: bastards!
In an interview he said that for EA Sports shipping a PC game on a physical disc is no longer a workable business model:
“[With the PC platform] we’ve got to find the right business model for us going forward. We really want to keep sports an important part of the portfolio that’s available to PC gamers, but the business model right now, shipping a physical disc for the PC, simply isn’t working for us,” he said.
“And along the context of making the right choices with our resources and making sure that we’re delivering a return on investment for valuable employee time, I’ve got to find innovative ways to bring our content to life on the PC and online is the way that that’s going to happen.”
So in brief it comes down to this: "We want to earn more money than ever by cutting costs and if we can sell games at the same price online and without the cost of a copy on disc it sounds great to us!".“And along the context of making the right choices with our resources and making sure that we’re delivering a return on investment for valuable employee time, I’ve got to find innovative ways to bring our content to life on the PC and online is the way that that’s going to happen.”

EA shows again why they have a bad name about making money at all costs ( or should I say 'at least costs'? ) They more and more look like swindlers.
NINJAFISH
Even blizzard has an online store you can buy digital copies of games from. Honestly I hate having to dig around looking for a play disc for any pc game.
Honestly, PC sales is a pretty small piece of the pie when looking at gaming overall. WoW is pulling cash from the wallets of many PC gamers which means less spending on other games.
Now if EA wants to do digital, but do that 3-5 install crap then their drm still sucks as much as the physical disc.
Speed
- If they keep the price at the level of retail this is not fair as in fact there are less costs involved and that should be reflected in the price you pay
- Not all countries are without download limits and thus buying a full retail game online will already take out a huge chunk of the monthly download limit!

Boxed copies are cheaper online than any download service and I like value myself when spending.
Is anyone expecting EA to realy reduce the price of there games if you get just the data... nope can't see it and further more binds you to there service to use them as well.
Ninjafish I have been using other means to play the games without a disc after there installed. Your also going to have to install the game again or face downloading it all if you reformat/upgrade and thats far more troublesome then to buy the game from a box. As Speed says with many ISP's or countries imposing Bandwidth limits per month it screws over those that are into gaming.
