Professor buys 8 PS3s for calculations

Gaurav Khanna, from Massachusetts' university, decided to link PS3s instead of buying hugely expensive supercomputers, to save some expenses.

The scientist bought 8 pieces of Sony's new console, linked them and installed Linux. The Cell-processors seem to be powerful enough to calculate the effect of a small black hole on a bigger black hole.

Is someone looking for an excuse to organise a private LAN-party?

This "professor" seems to be dummer than my....any professor i've heard of in a while. What the hell?

Anyone with even a small amount of sense will see that the PS3s high price comes from stuff like graphics cards, Blu-ray player, etc.

None of these are necessary for maths, andonly one graphics card is necessary for 3D modelling. He basically brought 8 blu-ray players and 8 graphics cards. I hope he's not using university funds for this.

It would save so much money, be easier, and more efficient if he simply bought a couple of motherboards (the ones that support two quad-core CPUs each), 4x Quad core CPUs, a hard drive, and an average graphics card. That's all he'd need for processing power. This setup would be SO MUCH faster, while will probably cost the same.

The stupidity of most people does not surprise me, but a professor? What the hell?

A) he didn't pay for these machines and b)he states they are the equivalent of 200 super computers.

People who type without thinking surprise me, but derf? ... lol

Ehm ... there's some serious difference between x86 and core architechture. Especially when you're doin' the maths :-)

I don't care what he states. I know from a study I read a few weeks back, that compared x64 quad core CPU processing power to the Cell processor, and concluded that in terms of sheer number crunching they were 2-3 times faster. If anyone wants to read this, I'll try and find it.

ever checked the price for a single high end intel quad core CPU ? then imagine the whole PC price , then check back on the PS3 price... you can do the math
