Psychologist: "Games cause depression"
CVG is reporting that last weekend, UK newspaper The Sun had an interview with "leading psychologist" Steve Pope who states videogames (like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2) can cause depression:
'One of the games causing many problems is the warfare series Call Of Duty. It is highly addictive and people play for hours on end. They spend all day killing people, then come off it and have to go about their daily business. I believe such games are one reason we are getting more violent.'
'I've got several patients who are what would be clinically termed addicted to... computer games. These things set the brain up for a pattern of gross fluctuation, too many highs and lows. For a short time, they can make people feel valued and boost their self-esteem. When they realise these feelings don't last, some people - particularly youngsters - can become down, even having feelings of depression.'
I get depressed from the fact that people like Pope are being called "experts" while it's clear they're just ignoring basic stuff like a patient's mental condition and completely put the blame on external influences (which indeed CAN be videogames but just about anything else as well)'I've got several patients who are what would be clinically termed addicted to... computer games. As with all other reports of this nature (and as speed points out) there are no other facts that explain the underlying issues that plague these people the expert is talking about.
Mind you, they wouldn't want to report that because it wouldn't sell the nasty evil games theory.
Nothing annoys me more than some pratt saying video games are the root of all evil and not providing any evidence as to why.
AAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhgggggggggggg!
