Alot of those smaller MMO developers do it. Because most people arent willing to put down $50 for some random game that not many people know about or have played. They have to use free trials to get people interested.

Even games like WoW had guest passes, to give people a sample of the game.

WoW didn't get guest passes until like half a year after launch. And RFO is an extremely popular MMO, it has been established in Asia for years. It's a marketing trick to attract more customers.

I respect the fact that MMO developers will let people demo their product for free. If it's a good game and more people subscribe, more power to them.

When they won't let people try it without buying the retail box and paying for a non-refundable first month, I get more suspicious of their motives.

I bought my normal package last January, less then 2 months after launch. It had a guest pass in it.

It's very common for MMO's these days to give out free trials. I mean ALL online games have free trials pretty much. CoV, CoH, DDO, SEED, WoW, Auto Assault... and others e.g. GW Factions...

As for timing, I remember EVE have had free trials on and off since it first started.
