RUMOR: Bungie and Microsoft splitting

As the title is saying, it is still a rumor, but a rumor that is growing in strength. The final 'discoveries' we can find at Gameinformer who got their information from a source close to Bungie. Below you can find a short summary.

Bungie would do a 'buy-back' of their shares owned by Microsoft to become independent once again. If this would go through there would still be some conditions. Microsoft would retain the rights to Halo, simply because this game made the Xbox somewhat succesful.

Another condition is that Bungie is required to ask Microsoft first to publish their new games. This way, Microsoft is able to keep the future hits of Bungie under their control before they can sell it to the competition.

After every Halo release, members of Bungie have departed to form their own development houses such as Certain Affinity and Wideload Studios. Why would Microsoft actually let go of the company who single-handedly made Xbox what it is today is the big question. And for that, Microsoft nor Bungie have revealed a true answer.

Let's hope this rumor gets cleared up fast.

Strange, but I suppose Bungie could sweep up more profits and have much more freedom on it's own. Personally if I was in control of some sort of developer company, I'd stay as far away from Microsoft as possible (release games for the Xbox360 but that's it). Getting too close to that giant usually means they'll simply buy you. That's how EA has killed half of the companies they acquired. That's also how Dell has destroyed what was once Alienware.
