Report blames used game sales for industry decline
A new report by analyst group Cowen and Company has compared the userbase of the current-gen consoles with that of the previous generation in 2003 and has come up with a weird conclusion: used game sales are the reason for the decline of the gaming industry:

Blaming used game sales for the entire decline of the gaming industry. Ridiculous! Just shows how serious this "analyst" company is... but I'm sure plenty of industry big shots will use this again to push more stuff down our throat like EA’s Online Pass.
The study compares the current hardware userbase of the PS3 and Xbox 360, which it claims at this moment in time is comparable to how PS2 and Xbox stood in 2003. However, current software sales for the two next-gen machines are around 20 per cent down on what they were for PS2 and Xbox, standing at 106m and 85.5m respectively
Why do I call this "weird"? Well, because in my opinion we have less great games compared to back then and we also didn't have that little thing called "global economic crisis".In fact, proof of that is even in the report:
The report adds that sales of games in their second month of availability are also down. Since 2001 they have on average fallen by 62 per cent. Examples cited include Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XIII, which saw sales drop 93 per cent in its second month compared to the first.
First month you see lots of people buying a game, hoping it will be great. Then word of mouth starts and people find out it isn't exactly as great as hoped and titles flood the second hand market where they get picked up at bargain price. If games would truly be great, they wouldn't arrive on the second hand market so fast and in such large numbers.
