Retailers: Steam is killing PC market

Posted on Thursday, 11 November 2010 by Speed, source: MCV
Well, for once it's not piracy that's killing PC gaming!

It seems that Valve Software's dominance on the digital downloads market for PC games with Steam is getting so big that the competition is getting killed. And they don't like it.

In a move to try and get their grip back, retailers are asking publishers to make Steam-free SKUs, just like Sports Interactive did with Football Manager 2011.

One of them had the following to say:
“I’ve fought hard for my customer, and never before have I had to give my customers away. Steam is killing the PC market and it is no wonder digital retailers are failing.

“Steam is locking down the market.”
Apparently at least two other digital retailers are facing financial problems due to the dominance of Steam.

Personally I think it's more a matter of price than anything else. Retailers with the best price for a product will always come out on top. Whether that's Steam or not.

Steam has great deals, a great social network, and a solid mostly bug free package. EA's is riddled with bugs. D2D, same thing plus having to wait sometimes days for a games patch to go live. If they are wondering why they are failing, its because of their flawed products. Lots used D2D but got tired of the crap service and slow patching. Along with all the features that come with steam, its not steam's fault they are failing, it's their own for having sub standard, lazy products.

for years pc games never had the front shelves to themselves, they're always in the back hiding. why are they so concerned now?
