San Andreas production halted, game pulled

Posted on Thursday, 21 July 2005 by Speed, source: Fragland.net
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has seen its rating changed from Mature to Adult Only. As a result of this, Take2 has decided to stop manufacturing the game until a new version without the hot coffee mod content is created.

Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO) announced today that the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has changed the rating of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on all platforms from "Mature 17+" (M) to "Adults Only 18+" (AO) because of the so-called "hot coffee mod," an unauthorized third party modification that alters the retail version of the game. Take-Two cooperated fully with the ESRB's investigation.

Rockstar Games has ceased manufacturing of the current version of the title and will begin working on a version of the game with enhanced security to prevent the "hot coffee" modifications. This version will retain the original ESRB M-rating and is expected to be available during the Company's fourth fiscal quarter. Rockstar Games will be providing AO labels for retailers who wish to continue to sell the current version of the title.

However, IEMA, the Interactive Entertainment Merchants Association, has decided to pull the game off the shelves in North America until a new version surfaces as they do not want to sell Adult Only content.

Meanwhile, Take2's press release also hints that they may start legal action against the people from the Action Replay device that allows the Hot Coffee content to be available on PS2

"We are deeply concerned that the publicity surrounding these unauthorized modifications has caused the game to be misrepresented to the public and has detracted from the creative merits of this award winning product," said Mr. Eibeler. Take-Two is exploring its legal options as it relates to companies that profited from creating and distributing tools for altering the content of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

So Mature doesn't include sexual content? Really, poor, poor America.

This isn't actually funny, a bunch of people with too much spare time are really fucking up a game in the eyes of many people, and reducing the sales of what is a really good game that deserves the merit and the high sales. In fact, it is completely ESRB's fault that they had badly investigated the game in the first place, and not found the hot coffee mod, while some stupid hacker somewhere easily managed to hack it within a couple of days of the game coming out. That they suddenly, a month after it comes out realise this and change the rating is completely unacceptable, and is ruining Take-Two's and Rockstar's sales and money earned from the game. While providing higher sales for other companies that probably thought up this whole endeavour. Whoever these companies are that will have legal action taken against will not get my money for any of their games if they are proven to be responsible for this.
