Now that FlatOut 2 has sold more than one million copies worldwide, it's time for Empire and Bugbear to announce FlatOut Ultimate Carnage (pka FlatOut Total Carnage), an Xbox360 exclusive arcade racer, still thriving on the content from the previous FlatOut games but this time with a "next-gen" flavour. A release is planned for June 2007.

Here are some of the improvements for the Xbox360 version:

Some of the many brand new design and gameplay components featured in FlatOut Ultimate Carnage include 12 cars racing on screen up from eight in FlatOut 2, five all-new single player and two all-new multiplayer game modes over the Xbox Live® online game service, over 8,000 dynamic objects per track up from 5,000 in FlatOut 2, widescreen High Definition resolution (720p), dynamic lighting and shadowing all with proper real-time environment mapping on all vehicles, downloadable content via Xbox Live, and 20,000 polygons per car up from 7,500 in the previous generation.

Eh, so it's basically FlatOut 2 with some eye-candy?

Thats good enough for me, the first was great fun but i never bothered getting the second game as it came out way after the X360 launched and i didnt want to go back to Xbox games.

So i never played the second game which means its all new to me.
Should be great fun although one thing i could never understand when i did play the original online was that everybody bitched and whinged when i rammed into them, i had countless arguments over that.
Talk about people missing the point.

Anyway the 2 screenshots look ok and i think this will be great fun online as long as people understand that its a demolition derby style game.

Let the carnage commence :P

Oh alright, I didn't realize the second one was never released for 360.

I also had great fun playing the first one online on PC (although the online support was crappy), but for some reason, I never cared that much about the sequel. Somehow, it wasn't the same thing anymore. I liked it that in the first one you actually needed a lot of skills to drive flat out and ram people without taking hit yourself, but the second one was too arcade for my taste.

decypher below is the proper report from IGN, note that it says it is being built from the ground up in order to take full advantage of the X360.

In other words its not just number two with bits tacked on and tarted up graphics as i guess we both kinda thought.

Developed by Bugbear Entertainment, the studio responsible for the previous FlatOuts, Ultimate Carnage is being built from the ground up to take advantage of the additional power of the Xbox 360. The game will be able to handle 12 cars on screen (up from eight in FlatOut 2), over 8,000 dynamic objects per track (compared to 5,000 in FlatOut 2), and 20,000 polygons per car (FlatOut 2 cars used 7,500 polygons). Ultimate Carnage will include five new single-player modes, and two new multiplayer modes will be available over Xbox Live. Widescreen and 720p support are also included.

Thanks, it does sound pretty good! Playing through Live with 12 other players can't be bad, especially if the graphics are up to modern X360 standards. Although I'm still somewhat sceptical about the handling, I'll certainly keep my eyes open for this one.
