PS3 can't save Sony
While Michael Pachter believes the PS3 is going to drop in price to $299, Reuters heard from a "person with knowledge of the matter" that Sony will likely be reporting an operating loss of no less than 1.1 billion dollars.

Sony may post an operating loss of 100 billion yen ($1.1 billion) in the business year to March 31, instead of its previously estimated 200 billion yen profit, said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because Sony has not yet revised its forecasts.
Not only is this a huge amount, it's also the biggest operational loss the company would have had in 14 years. The PS3 dropping in price in such a climate? I think that chance is pretty slim...

The problem was that Sony has been taking a huge hit on the sale of every PS3 since the console launched.

They may have won the format war and killed HDDVD but at what cost? Personally I think Blu-ray is still 2-3 years away from becoming mainstream or even close to overtaking DVD as the mainstream format. Unfortunately for them, they took a gamble during a period of time where the world economy is weak and investor confidence is already very low.

The only way to speed up the bluray would be to reduce the prices of the films. £15 - £25 is a huge price to pay for a film. Not just in the current climate but in general most people will not pay that much money

Considering that sony has the licenses to bluray i doubt in time they at going to be hurting that much. They will make it up in time 10 fold when bluray cds come down and people start buying. This will happen in the next 5 years I think, Poeple in the US this year are being forced to buy boxes for the new digital signal and alot of them instead of buying a 60$ box for a old tv, they are buying new tv. So i think in time they will be get on bluray .
