Sony: PS3 coding intentionally hard

We already brought you some nice quotes from Sony Entertainment chairman Kazuo Hirai taken from Official PlayStation Magazine. But it seems that he wasn't done just yet.

Eurogamer read the same article and got some more statements that are quite 'out there'.

He claims that the PS3 was intentionally made hard to code for to ensure that the console will continuously see advancements over the promised ten year life cycle.
"It's hard to program for, and a lot of people see the negatives of it, but if you flip that around, it means the hardware has a lot more to offer,"
"We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so then the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine-and-a-half years?"
This makes me, and many with me I guess, think about the first PSP which was locked at 222 Mhz even though it could go up to 333 Mhz.

While he has a valid point that a console should still be able to amaze even near the end of the life cycle, one can't help but think about the many titles that won't live up to the potential over that same life cycle.

I hope for this guy's sake that some of what he says comes over a bit too direct because of some language barrier during the translation. All Sony does not need right now is another PR incident like we had quite some in 2007.

There is still no point of making coding harder than it has to be... It's simply important to have good games, and making it easy to code helps that cause.

Guess the war of words is heating up.

My friends and I collectively own all 3 consoles (Xbox 360, Sony PS3, and Nintendo Wii). I would say that each has its own strengths and weaknesses. I wouldn?t dismiss Xbox 360 if I were Sony. It has come a very long way since the original Xbox and Microsoft put in a ton of work for the 360 version. I also recall somewhere I read that Xbox 360 outsold Sony over the 2008 holiday season.

On the note about having access to all 3 consoles, I recently picked up an Xbox 360 Pro (the 60GB version) along with Tom Clancy?s End War for around $270 total, which was awesome. (By the way, I got it at Dell through a deal listed at <a href="www.uberi.com";>www.uberi.com<;/a>. That?s also where I go to find a few good deals on games for all three platforms).

I wonder at what point we will see more motion sensor based games and control similar to Wii on Xbox 360 and PS3. Surely that will significantly increase the appeal of Xbox 360 and PS3, and take away Wii?s advantages. Perhaps it?s patent related or something. It would also be nice to know the features and plans for the next generation of game consoles.

yer how will they better the new consoles? except no ring of death or disc read error ... microsoft could get rid of the chainsaw effect on games

sony does have a point (even if i dont believe its intentional) games will keep getting better as the ps3 lives on ... its fact that people will be coding better later on so games will be better :D

Meh, it isn't hard to code, allot of programmers said so. Yes, it is tougher then a PS2 of XBOX or XBOX360, but all of them have been on the market so the programmers have had time to learn it...
