Sony: competition on the way down

It's been a while we've seen some slamming between the Big Three so thank you Sony UK managing director Ray Maguire for giving us a nice fat quote in which you slam your competition:

"Yes, we might take a bit longer sometimes to bring a product to market, but when we do, we bring you the most powerful gaming platform ever to hit - and it will be something that will around for a very long time,"

"It's nowhere near even halfway through its lifecycle, and I could argue that some other competing formats are on their way down right now,"
I think there are plenty of people who would beg to differ.

It's not how long it lasts, it's how much appeal it has. Say it only sells 50 million units but last 10 years. Not saying much. The PS2 lasted so long because of the appeal of the games, not because of the hardware (although it doesn't hurt to have both).

The PS2 lasted so long because it didn't have any legitimate competition and never tried to expand the market. Complain all you want about the Xbox being flawed, , it brought on-line gaming to consoles. On-line gaming and competitive graphics are the reason the console market is moving forward now. Legitimate competition in the market pushes innovation and progress. We won't see another PS2-style lifecycle. It just wont happen anymore.

Not to mention, you can trivialize the entire console "war" just by comparing them to World of Warcraft. A single PC videogame puts up higher profit margins than an entire console lineup...

Very valid points.
