Posted on Monday, 9 July 2007 by Speed, source: 1Up
Last week we reported that rumours were fyling around that Sony might lower the price of the PS3 with no less than $100. Well, today we can tell you that 1Up has received confirmation from Sony about this.

As of this Tuesday the company will be dropping the price of the 60GB PlayStation 3 SKU to $499 while there will also be a new 80GB version available for $599 as of August.

Small detail: this is currently only valid for the US. No confirmation of price drops in Europe yet.

This will probably help PS3 sales a lot but they still need a stronger library of games. Also it makes you wonder why anyone would pay $100 more for 20 GB of storage.

They maybe should have waited for a holiday season or release of a highly anticipated game.

They originally were going to wait for September if I remember correctly, plus they are already loosing money on every unit sold. It's the razor-and-blade strategy that all consoles use, breakeven or loose money on the consoles and make it back on the games. And the versions don't just differ in storage space, but other stuff as well unless they've changed that.

For me though, this is just the sort of thing I've been waiting for. So I'll probably buy one soon.
