Sony patents 'wiimote'

Posted on Wednesday, 6 December 2006 by abroZ, source: uspto.gov
Sony took a patent on what looks like a similar technology as Nintendo’s latest offering the ‘Wiimote’. Sony calls it the ‘Remote input device’. Here’s the full deal:

An input device providing users with a pointing capability includes a sender portion and a receiver portion. The sender portion is adapted to be manipulated by a user to specify a target point within a target area. The sender portion projects a light beam including a pattern on to the target area. A receiver portion includes one or more sensor units located in or near the target area. At least some of the sensor units receive a portion of the light beam regardless of the location of the target point within the target area. A processing unit in the receiver portion analyzes the portions of the light beam received by one or more sensor units to determine an attribute of the target point. The attribute can be the location or relative motion of the target point. The receiver portion may be integrated with a display device.

After adding the tilt sensor into the PS3 contoller it seems like we'll have a full-on Sony version of the Wiimote. I can't wait until PSP: Touchscreen Edition comes out!

God damnit, if Nintendo was like Microsoft with too much money, they would probably be suing Sony's arses 24/7. It seems most of the stuff Sony comes up with is a copy of something already out there but slightly modified.

According to The New York Times the PS3 has 'great graphics but they are in no way better than the Xbox 360' and this is after playign 12 games for over 30 hours. So basically the PS3 is asking so much cash for the same graphics as Xbox 360, much less games, a blu ray drive that might not even take off (umd anyone?) and now they're copying the Wiimote.

One thign I know for sure though. Sony's complete incompetence in production (PS3 shortages, 4 million laptop batteries recalled) will make sure they'll never make a decent profit, not even when they steal other's ideas. Bastards.

I agree, that's certainly something to think about.

i doubt this story is true cause patents take longer than that to approve. They may have applied for a patent, but not have been awarded it yet. Provide proof.

Yawn. Seeing as you didn't even take the time to register I am sure you will be really missed around here. I would take the time to say goodbye but I don't know who the hell you are. But I guess you wouldn't be around to read it anyway. So why am I typing this LOL.

He makes a valid point, the people on this site do share their opinions quite often. Oh well I'm sure he'll be more comfortable at ww.ZOMGPS3ROKZ.com
