Sony proactively takes on BBC on failure report
Posted on Thursday, 17 September 2009 by Speed, source: Gamesindustry.biz
Before the BBC got a chance to broadcast a Watchdog report that states Sony's PS3 has systematic hardware failures and inadequate repair service, Sony already issued a statement that leaves little room for interpretation.
A quote:
Although Sony may seem acting like a bully, it's not entirely wrong in this case.
The Watchdog team set up a van outside Sony UK's HQ, offering people to fix their console for free if it's broken, issued a tech report based on only three consoles (one had already been altered by its owner), and was using a third party repair team that benefit from having people be worried about broken consoles.
It does sound a lot like the programme was trying to make Sony look bad, especially as Microsoft would have been a much easier target seeing the larger number of failures the X360 has. The fact that Watchdog presenter Iain Lee has worked on a freelance basis for Microsoft doesn't look all too objective either.
It is expected that Watchdog will be taking a look at the Xbox360 as well but no date or schedule for such a follow-up has been set yet.
A quote:
"I regret to say that neither the correspondence to date, nor the 'PlayStation Repair Action Team 'stunt, have given me much confidence that you are treating this issue fairly. If the report is broadcast in what appears to be its current form, SCEUK will scrutinise its accuracy and will take all necessary steps to protect its reputation and that of the PS3."
The entire statement takes up six pages and can be read in full hereAlthough Sony may seem acting like a bully, it's not entirely wrong in this case.

But this report was silly and unsatisfactory, and ill-fitting to try and cast it as another 'RROD' given how frequent these hardware problems are.
