Sony replies on anti Blue-Ray remarks

David Jaffe, best know as being the creator of the divine game God of War, didn't really agree with Sony's choice for the Blu-Ray disks.

He criticised the strategy Sony used and said they had better released the PS3 without Blu-Ray. That would've reduced the costs and made the console a bit cheaper.

Sony respects the freedom of speech but obviously they don't agree with him. Here's what they said:

"While we respect [Jaffe's] opinion, we feel strongly that the future of gaming lies in the ability to deliver more to the consumer -- more gameplay options, more lifelike graphics, more dynamic sound -- all in high definition. To do that, you need a storage vehicle such as the 50GB Blu-ray disc, because your standard 9GB DVD simply can't handle the demands of true next generation gaming."

Nice to see that everything is under control.

To be dead honest with you, I really doubt there will be a PS4. It would take Sony's bad management at least 10 years to organise and make one, and given their losses with the PS3, I don't think their shareholders would approve Sony staying in the console market, they're not exactly doing amazingly well in their other markets either, so they can't keep supporting the console wars with revenues from other industries.

Very true, Sony Corp just doesn't have the cash themselves nor credit with the shareholders

Actually, with PS2, Sony was funding their other parts of the business with the console department. Don't see that happening with PS3 just yet.

Ill tell you why Blue Ray is needed:

"640K ought to be enough for anybody." Bill Gates, 1981

And since the PS4 isn't due in 2 years, for a long lifetime Blue Ray is necessary!
Also by the time the full potential of the PS3 is 'unlocked' by developers, the storage size of a blue ray disc will barely be sufficient (perhaps even 2 discs are needed).

From a game developers perspective the high price of this game means less PS3 sales resulting in equally less game sales. It makes more sense to develop for the PS2 at the moment than for the PS3. Mr. Jaffe, whom ofcourse is used to a large PS2 userbase (more $$$) must now be spending more time and energy to develop for the PS3 for much less expected $$$. Hence his criticism ( 'i dont agree' buhu)

Sure the PS3 is currently aimed at the upper market and loyal (former) PS2'ers.
resulting in low sales. But remember that this is just a slow starting locomotive which will eventually (hopefully soon) race past its competition.

Since it wouldn't be code, but high-end graphics that would take up increasingly more (and already have) space in games, sony does have a point, that in the future 50 gig disks will be needed.

They went wrong when they thought that the future would be within 5 years. I reckon at the least 10 years before 50 gig games come out.

Oh and to the anon poster quoting bill gates. I hope you have realised that lately the trend with increased storage space has provided people with 300+ gig drives at realtively cheap, but honestly, what normal PC user needs even 100 gigs of space?

I use my PC A LOT and I still have trouble getting past 200gigs before some virus corrupts half my data and I reformat one of my partitions.

Available space != required space.

lol, yeah I was writing it and then I lost track of what I wanted to say, so there you go: cheesy ending :)

@derf: 1.44 MB Floppy -> 100 MB Zip Disk-> 700 MB CD -> 4.7GB DVD -> next step would be around 35 GB close to blue ray which can hold up about 25 GB per layer (HD-DVD can hold up to 17 GB per layer).

Definition of Code: "In computer programming, the word code refers to instructions to a computer in a programming language. In this usage, the noun "code" typically stands for source code, and the verb "to code" means to write source code, to program. This usage may have originated when the first symbolic languages were developed and were punched onto cards as "codes"."

From en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_(computer_programming)

So stfu muppet, code is the programming itself. Graphics are things like texture files and animated movement.

Faceless pokefuck.

Kojima for one has said there'll be very little space left on a BlueRay disk after all the high def textures and audio in MGS4 are added.
Then again... all this data could be another load of excruciatingly long cut scenes :-/
But I'm sure even Jaffe himself will push the BlueRay to its limits now that he has little choice but to use it.
