Sony sued over Cell Processor

Posted on Tuesday, 31 July 2007 by Speed, source: Net-Gen
Sony's big breakthrough technology with the PS3, next to Blu-ray, is without a doubt the Cell Processor. However, seems they might have stolen it as Next-Gen is reporting that a company called Parallel Processing is sueing Sony for patent infringements

The patent, “Synchronized Parallel Processing with Shared Memory” was issued in October 1991. It describes a high-speed computer that breaks down a program “into smaller concurrent processes running in different parallel processors” and resynchronizes the program for faster processing times.

Parallel Processing, the “exclusive licensee” of the patent, states in the suit, filed in the US District Court’s Eastern District of Texas Tyler Division: “On information and belief, Defendant Sony Corporation of America has infringed and continues to infringe on the ‘000 Patent by making, using, importing, offering for sale and/or selling products among other things, covered by one or more claims of the ‘000 Patent, including, but not limited to, Sony Playstation III [sic].”

My guess: they'll settle.

Other possibility: they keep the court case going on for ages until PS4 is released without a Cell processor and tell everyone that Cell is previous-gen anyway. Thén they settle and suddenly include Cell ;)

(Dual Shock anyone?)

The Peice of Shit 3 is about as good as what I just flushed in the toilet. Show me one real invention Sony invented in the past 10 years, wihtout stealing it from another company.

I hope this does some serious damage to Sony, as the only thing they are too big for their own good. They own a good chunk of the music and movie industry, and want to own each industry they enter.

Sony Fanbois will always support Sony, just like they do their right or left hand. Some jackass at GameCrazy said "shut the fuck up, Sony will never lower the price of PS3", then a few days later, $100 drop. He won't talk to people about it now.

Make one true logical reason Sony should win this lawsuit, and maybe, just maybe, I'll give a damn to not laugh in your face.

Who gives a crap if they get sued or not, its not going to affect the PS3 in any way.

I agree with first Anon poster, some games would be nice as i've had mine for ages now and only Motor Storm kept me entertained, Resistance got boring really quick, Bluray is the only thing that has made me keep the machine.

But i have seen plenty on it after E3 to know im glad i own one now, got the Heavenly Sword demo on thursday and its beautiful to look at and awesome to play plus Killzone 2 surprised me, thought it would be crap since the first Killzone was but that looks stunning and then the big names all look great aswell, Gran Turismo looks amazing and Metal Gear although not as graphicaly stunning as i had hoped still looks great and more importantly looks like it will play brilliantly and a game called Uncharted Drakes Fortune looks great aswell.

The PS3 had a shit launch agreed, but good games are coming, dont be so blinkered, i love my 360 and in a few months time when i get my hands on some of the above mentioned games i will love my PS3 quite a bit more aswell.

It might. We might be lucky and the settlement will cost enough money to dig an even deeper hole in Sony's console department. Eventually when they've lost enough money, they'll realise what they've done wrong. Though I bet that will be too late, since it seems (look at the ex-CEO) that as soon as someone realises, they resign :P

When Sony lost lawsuit for controller, all games that supported rumble were supposed to be pulled from shelves. Will all games that use the the multicore processor be forced off the shelves as well?
