Sony upgrades Blu-ray capacity

affirmative, we have more space!
Sony and Panasonic just announced that they are planning to upgrade the Blu-ray capacity from 25GB to 33.4GB.

According to a report of Nikkei, the increase in size has been done because of the way that files are stored.
Quote:
in more technical terms, is thanks to new partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) signal processing, which "assumes inter-symbol interference, which makes it difficult to base optical disc quality evaluation on jitter, as is widely done now for Blu-ray and many other optical discs".
The increase counts for all layers of the Blu-Ray disc, which means a disc with two layers can now store a total of 66.8GB.

This new technology is compatible with all Blu-ray players after they receive a small firmware update. Good news for Hideo Kojima, because he will now have even more space to fill up with his favorite franchise.

Blue Ray is dead. Blue Ray discs are getting cheaper then DVDs which is a sign of dying product.

Blu-ray is only just getting mainstream. Far from dead.

Yeah I was in Blockbuster the other day and was surprised to see Public Enemies on dvd for I think £15 and then saw it on blu-ray for £12, not much cheaper but cheaper none the less. :D

Since there's no real alternative to BR, when looking forward in development (as opposed to looking backwards, ie DVD), I doubt very much it's dying, hell I'm about to get my first BR player together with a 50" Panasonic Plasma from their V10E series! It just means it's about to become mainstream and taking over from DVD - and about damn time too.
