Spielberg looking at Halo novels for upcoming movie
It seems the upcoming Halo movie is getting some life in it again.
We're not going to completely give you the full background story on what's been going on with the announced Halo movie up to now (click here for full history) but summarized Fox and Universal have ended their partnership on it with quite some bad aftertaste in their mouths and a legal minefield all around.
However, it seems Steven Spielberg and his company Dreamworks have taken an interest and have found a way to go forward without stepping onto one of those mines: use the Halo novels as source material instead of the games:

However, it seems Steven Spielberg and his company Dreamworks have taken an interest and have found a way to go forward without stepping onto one of those mines: use the Halo novels as source material instead of the games:
While insiders say that Fox and Universal have settled their differences out of court, a person intimately involved with the original Halo deal tells Vulture that “Fox fucked them completely” and Universal lost close to all of its $12 million investment. And that residual anger over the wasted money is the big reason why DreamWorks is so explicitly saying its project is based on the books: By citing "different" source material, it preemptively neutralizes any attempt by Universal lawyers to demand that the new studio reimburse its $12 million in development costs.
Don't get your hopes up too high on seeing a Halo movie anytime soon though. There hasn't even a writer been hired for the project and Microsoft isn't all too anxious to get someone working on a movie that could possibly screw up their multi-billion franchise:While Microsoft execs have at least paid lip service to wanting to see the movie made, one source scoffs, “It’s a gigantic waste of time, because [Microsoft] doesn’t want anything to happen in any other media that could screw up a multi-billion dollar franchise. Somebody has to be in control of a movie; it’s a director’s medium. But they’re completely averse to that. Because if Steven Spielberg fucks it up, what’s your recourse? So the rule is: ‘First, do no harm.’”
I'm guessing we'll see a Halo movie by the time Halo is long forgotten ;)In other news:
