Spore & Mass Effect require regular validation
People without internet connection shouldn't consider buying Spore or Mass Effect. Reason: according to Bioware's Derek French both games will have a new type of copy protection that requires online validation every ten days.
So, in short: this copy protection sounds very similar to Microsoft's activation policy of Windows OS. And look at how well that works against piracy!
Honestly: copy protection systems are such a hassle that people would almost decide to get pirated copies just to avoid all the trouble.
It's like with DVD's. When you get an illegal copy, you get the movie and that's it. If you get an original one, you have to skip through several trailers you're not interested in, have to wade through advertising from the movie company AND (over here, dunno if it's similar somewhere else) listen at how piracy is illegal and you should buy products to support the people that made them! Like... WTF?
Mass Effect uses SecuROM and requires an online activation for the first time that you play it. Each copy of Mass Effect comes with a CD Key which is used for this activation and for registration here at the BioWare Community. Mass Effect does not require the DVD to be in the drive in order to play, it is only for installation.
After the first activation, SecuROM requires that it re-check with the server within ten days (in case the CD Key has become public/warez'd and gets banned). Just so that the 10 day thing doesn't become abrupt, SecuROM tries its first re-check with 5 days remaining in the 10 day window. If it can't contact the server before the 10 days are up, nothing bad happens and the game still runs. After 10 days a re-check is required before the game can run.
If you're wondering whether you can lend your copy of the game to a friend: online reactivation can be done up to three times after which you'll need to contact EA Tech support. After the first activation, SecuROM requires that it re-check with the server within ten days (in case the CD Key has become public/warez'd and gets banned).
