Real or fake?

Last weekend we got a batch of new screens through a press kit that was released to Kotaku and had identical screens for both the PS3 and X360 versions of Final Fantasy XIII, except for some button layovers. Guess what, they were fake.

Well, not the screens themselves of course, but Square-Enix has now come clean and stated that both versions will NOT be completely identical, but almost the same.

Unfortunately we did mistakenly include screenshots taken for pre-production (non-promotional use only) in our latest release of assets. Screenshots from the final game intended for the press kit will be released shortly. As shown in our recent demo tour and Microsoft's X10 event, there is no material difference between the two consoles.

I wonder why anyone would need fake screens for non-promotional use...
