Stainless Steel Studios is no more

Stainless Steel Studios, the company founded by Age of Empires-creator Rick Goodman, has suddenly... vanished? Their website is no more and according to the findings of fansite R&FHeaven the developer behind rts games like Empire Earth and Empires: Dawn of the Modern World is really closed down.

Earlier today Bob Scott, a former employee of Stainless Steel posted that SSSI was no more, his post was questioned at first, but as we began to draw information together about Bob, things seemed to be falling into place. It was looking like SSSI might have broken up. A couple of minutes ago SSSI QA, Chooch709, affirmed Bob's post. All that remains is an official press release from Midway, and hopefully some input from now former Stainless Steel staffers.

This would be the end of a nice era of rts developing. Empire Earth is considered a classic by many, Empires: DotMW was not that good but SSSI's newest real-time strategy game, Rise & Fall: Civilizations at War, looked like a real next-gen experience (and that's not a marketing statement or something, this game was the only real strategy stunner at E3 if you ask me).

Apparently the game is only some weeks away from going gold so perhaps Midway will still release it in some form. Maybe they (or Rick Goodman himself) will also give an official statement soon regarding the status of the project and the reasons behind the departure of Stainless Steel Studios.

sad to them go. They really tried some inovatative stuff even if it wasnt entirely successful. Sucks to see so many developers work for years on a game and have it canned/co-opted just before its finished and then get laid off right before the holidays.

The game will almost certainly be released despite SSSI's closure. SSSI was a truly innovative studio, and produced some excellent stuff. R&F will unfortuntely be their last, but perhaps their best title from what I've seen during playtesting. Great bunch of guys there, I wish them the best.
