The guys over at Shacknews have had an interesting chat with Stardock's Brad Wardell on PC Gaming.

In the second part of the interview, two main things come up: digital distribution isn't going to overtake retail anytime soon and Microsoft's Games for Windows LIVE sucks.

Regarding digital distribution, the man had the following to say:
A lot of people keep predicting digital distribution is going to kill off retail, and that's not going to happen any time soon. Retail sales are still gigantic. Demigod has sold more copies at Walmart than anywhere else. Even though it's on Impulse--right now we have a sale this week, you can get Demigod for $20. But I guarantee you that Walmart sold more copies this week than we did, even though we sold thousands and thousands of copies this week
Right on!

Regarding Games for Windows LIVE, it's clear that Microsoft is helping PC gaming to go downhill:
I started out as a big Games for Windows Live advocate. I intended for Elemental to be on Games for Windows Live, but then as we got closer, the Xbox group took it over more and more. And they have things where, oh, if you want to use Games for Windows Live to update your game, you have to go through [their] certification. And if you do it more than X number of times, you have to pay money. It's like, "My friends, you can't do that on the PC."

On the console, I don't have to update my game because an anti-virus program got an update and is now identifying my VB scripts as viruses and I have to apply an emergency patch. That would just add insult to injury. We've had to upgrade our games plenty of times over the years, not because we found some bug, but because some third-party program, or driver, or whatever screwed it up. If Games for Windows Live maintains that strategy and they take over, I'm done. I'm not making PC games. I would be done.
A very interesting read.

"Games for Windows LIVE" is rubbish, had the free download of Batman AA and had to install steam and GfW Live and realy hate them both, got 3 weeks left before win7 is out and i'm, not going to put batman back on when i install that. When i look at games now i always look for the GfW LIVE and if it's on then i won't buy the game, realy want Dawn of war 2 but won't get it because of it. If more games take on the GfW Live then i will just have to go PS3 for all my gaming. :(

I would say 95% of my gaming friends use Steam and it works well for me. Makes deciding what game I want to play that night easy.

Never used GfW so I cant comment on that.
