Stupid parents afraid of Wii Zapper

Posted on Saturday, 15 September 2007 by Speed, source: Star Ledger
Over at the Star Ledger several parents have issued concerns about the upcoming Wii zapper (controller that looks like a gun) as they believe it will incite violence

"Great, this is what we need. Children with guns learning how to aim and shoot. Then we can sit back and wonder what is happening to our country with kids killing kids......what's next? Could we make it squirt blood, too" one reader commented

A "very concerned grandparent" wrote:
"....Why don't they enclose an application to the NRA in every box as well....the marketing person who came up with this brain child of an idea should be fired."

I guess these parents weren't around when games like Duck Hunt were released, and I also doubt they've ever go into a video arcade where there are tons of arcade machines with real-looking guns available for play?

Luckily, however, not everyone is as stupid as the people quoted above:

"....I really hope that those people out there who believe that a gun-shaped remote will turn every kid that touches one into a homicidal maniac, don't ruin the fun for us Wii-playing adults who can handle the reality. I grew up with toy guns and also shot a rifle in the sixth grade and never killed anyone....If you don't think it's a good idea, then please, feel free to exercise your right to protest by not purchasing the product....."

I wonder when Jack Thompson says something about the Wii Zapper. Oh right, this is a Nintendo product, not Take Two, so he'll probably not have noticed.

You know, I sometimes wonder if these stories are actually true. They always seem to come out with a very controversial statement and kick off the comments with a "worried parent/guardian". After that word spreads like wildfire through the gaming community and every man and his dog visits the site to stand up for our favorite pastime.

Appears to be cleaver marketing to me, it’s the best way to guarantee you will have thousands of people visit the originators website.

It’s annoying because if the gaming community doesn’t react I suppose that would be taken as a sign that we agree with whatever harebrained scheme they have come up with to discredit gaming.

I could join the band wagon and reiterate the comments that have been posted on the Star Ledger site but what would be the point, we all know they are talking out of their proverbial behinds.

The see us all as crazed maniac’s ready to snap at any minute so they will never listen to us or accept that games/film/tv are not the reason for the atrocities that have happened in the past, its just plain old crazy people.
