Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance announced

Posted on Thursday, 28 June 2007 by Ryuken, source: THQ
THQ has announced a standalone addon for Supreme Commander. The title is Forged Alliance and it'll feature a new faction (no surprise after the three end teasers of the original game), a new campaign, new units and new maps.

Developed by renowned RTS designer Chris Taylor and his Gas Powered Games studio, Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance follows the epic story of the original game in the aftermath of the Infinite War. Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance will be available as a standalone title offering full compatibility with the original game, enabling all-new strategic options.

"Supreme Commander raised the standard for scope and scale in the RTS genre and is one of the highest rated strategy games of all time," said Bob Aniello, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, THQ. "Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is pushing the boundaries yet again promising an exciting new chapter to fans worldwide."

"Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is not only the continuation of the epic story that is unfolding inside the game's universe, it is the continuation of our goal to move the bar for RTS gaming even higher than ever," says Chris Taylor, CEO of Gas Powered Games. "Forged Alliance offers over 100 new units, more maps and an entirely new faction... we are stuffing this game with all kinds of new features!"

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is the next chapter in the critically acclaimed Supreme Commander franchise that set the standard for scope and scale in the RTS genre. The game continues the epic story following the Infinite War, featuring an all-new single-player campaign, a new faction and a myriad of innovative multiplayer features. More than one hundred new units will give players access to cutting-edge strategic options, including fully realized navies, orbital weaponry and advanced counter intelligence technologies.

The release is planned for November this year. It's pretty likely we'll see more info and some screenshots in the next few weeks.

I was super hyped for SupCom, followed it for about 2yr before its release and was even in through most of the beta. It is an awsome game, but it lost my interest rather quickly. I feel like it is mostly due to the official map and unit editors never being released. They were both supposed to be shipped with the game, then avaiable for download upon rlease, then shortly after, then... Maybe this will bring it back for me, but I'm getting the feeling that the expansion is just a way to make more money off of not giving us editors.

@Anonymous: it only got official as of yesterday mate, look at "Source". There have been rumours but hell, it's not a big guess that an RTS gets an expansion.

@Majithise: the official map editor has been released for a few weeks now, it's on GPGnet, under the Vault at Tools. You'll need some other graphic tools to get the most out of it though, it really is what the devs used to create the original maps.

As for a unit editor, there has been a fanmade unit importing tool since a few weeks after release. GPG can't release their unit tools because of some 3D program license.

Check out the forums for more info about it.
