THQ won't try to compete with WoW... for now
World of Warcraft has well over 6 million paying subscribers all over the globe and it still reaches the number 1 spot in US PC-sales from time to time. Unstoppable one would say, but some other online games aren't doing bad at all (like the Guild Wars series with over two million copies sold by now). Still, WoW won't get much competition from the really big publisher houses anytime soon it seems.
THQ, on the rise on the PC-platform with very decent games like Dawn of War and Full Spectrum Warrior and pretty much a big company too, also won't attempt to break Blizzard's market leader status.
Comments from THQ president/CEO Brian Farrell were picked up by GameSpot. Farrell explains why his firm, as many others, isn't even trying to change things:
The game keeps on selling and selling though, I'll guess they'll need to wait quite some time before the game runs out of steam (and even then Blizzard has still the Burning Crusade expansion coming up, which might very well improve sales even more).
It's a pity that WoW doesn't get worthy competition from a real mmorpg, supported by one of the major publishers. Two of them, MicroSoft and EA, already chickened out several months before the release of WoW, by cancelling their high-profile mmorpg's Mythica and Ultima X. If there aren't much other titles in the same vein around, it doesn't surprise me at all that WoW keeps on breaking records everywhere.

"We're looking at it very closely, but I want to find the right opportunity," Farrell said. "I think what you will not [Farrell's emphasis] see THQ do is come out with another fantasy-type game. The other thing we're thinking is these things tend to have a window. Right now that product is World of Warcraft, so the idea would be to time something for when that product is going to be on its downward slope. To come out with something competitive now I think would be misguided for anyone, including THQ."

Weak competition? Is that why people still play the 8 year old starcraft?
I'm no blizzard fanboy, but their games have quality. I'm not sure what you consider competition but I would have considered EQ2 competition. SOE isnt exactly a small developer. WoW has pushed out the competition not because their weak, but because their product is just better. The only reason Guild wars is doing so well, is because its targeting a different audience, those people who arnt willing to P2P. But if know anything about blizzard or Guild Wars, you would know that guild wars is made up of alot of ex-blizzard employees.
As for the anonymous who says WoW gets boring in a short period of time, yea I'm sure after you logged your 85th day on your undead rogue you were pretty bored, I would have been too. The people who say WoW is boring have usually logged way too much time on their character or have been playing for a long time. How many other games have you been playing for 10 months, that you still play?

TBH, most MMO's suck indeed. IMO WoW sucks... that's why I play EVE. In some games over time they get dull, though I found that usually in EVE the game grows more interesting over time. There's always a new niche to discover, and there's always a new aspect to go after. If you play the game one for 14 days, you only have a very faint grasp of what it means. So... saying EVE sucks based on a 14 day trial is like saying football sucks from watching it on TV :)
