The Duke is alive! Thanks to... Gearbox?
It's been in development for all eternity, it was the end of 3D Realms as we knew them and there's still a big lawsuit regarding it going on with Take 2. Yes, we are indeed talking about Duke Nukem Forever!
If you thought the above would have made certain we would never see this game arriving in shops, you MAY be wrong. "Sources" have told Kotaku that none other than Borderlands developer Gearbox Software has taken over development of Duke Nukem Forever and that a playable demo would even be released later this year.
Although this sounds very nice and all, we suggest to remain sceptical at the moment.
First of all, none of the involved parties (Take2, 3D Realms or Gearbox) wanted to comment on the rumour. Take2 did confirm they still have the publishing rights for the game, something that should make it difficult for Gearbox to take over development from 3D Realms as it has earlier been confirmed that the defunct studio is still working on it while being in a lawsuit with Take2.
Last but not least, papers from that same lawsuit showed that Gearbox has been working on another game called Duke Begins which had been halted at the time.
So IF Gearbox is (still) working on Duke, our guess is it isn't on Duke Nukem Forever but rather that unknown Duke Begins which Take 2 earlier confirmed hadn't been cancelled, just put on hold.
